The Texas Rangers announced that Myrtle Beach Pelicans third baseman Joey Gallo has been named the Texas Rangers Minor League Player of the Month for April, according to a news release. He is the first Pelican to win the award since Andrew Clark and Mike Olt in 2011. The other April award winners were former Pelicans pitcher Nick Tepesch (Pitcher of the Month), Matt West (Reliever of the Month) and Hickory’s Lewis Brinson (Defender of the Month).

Gallo hit .317 with nine home runs, the second most in the minors. Starting all 24 games in April, he knocked in 22 runs, according to the release. He also ranked among the MiLB leaders in slugging percentage (2nd, .744), total bases (T-8th, 61), extra-base hits (T-9th, 15), and RBI (T-16th, 22).

• Myrtle Beach’s Thursday game with Potomac was rained out, so the two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 5:05 p.m.

NCAA golf rained out

The first round of the NCAA Raleigh Men’s Golf Regional has been suspended due to heavy rain. Coastal’s Ben Wheeler and Andrew Dorn are the only two Chanticleers in the event.

Play will resume Friday at 11:30 a.m.


Coastal Carolina University’s Kiana Quolas has been named to the NFCA Division I All-Region teams for the second straight season, according to a news release.

Quolas repeated as unanimous Big South Pitcher of the Year after posting a 27-5 record and a 1.29 ERA this season, according to the release. She ranked 11th in the nation in ERA and tied for 10th with the 27 victories, while cracking the top five in single-season Coastal history for wins, strikeouts and ERA.
