Little River

Established | Unincorporated area of Horry County.

Origin of name | A group of Native Americans called the area Mineola, which means “little river.” There was just a river in the area before the Intracoastal Waterway.

What’s grand about it | Today, Little River is widely known for its deep-sea fishing, charter boats and commercial fishing. One of the sights of the day is to watch fishing and shrimp boats going out in the early morning for the day’s catch, with the sun coming up and mist rising from the calm inlet waters.

Major events | Blue Crab Festival, Shrimpfest and Taste of the South.

Major employers | Seacoast Medical Center, SunCruz Casinos, Big M Casino, A.O. Hardee and Sons, retail and the fishing industry.

What’s new | The annual Shrimp and Jazz Festival is now the Shrimpfest and offers a variety of music.
