Conway
Established | Incorporated in 1898.
Origin of name | Named for Robert Conway, a Revolutionary War veteran who settled there.
What’s grand about it | Conway is the county seat and one of the oldest towns in South Carolina. It was called Kingston when settlers first arrived in 1735. Through the years, town leaders have so valued the graceful, live oak trees that streets were built around them. It has since become a destination for artists, art lovers and history buffs.
Major events | Riverfest, which kicks off the Grand Strand’s Fourth of July, and the Rivertown Music and Arts Festival.
Major employers | Conway Medical Center has more than 1,000 employees, Coastal Carolina University employs 250 faculty members and has enrolled more than 9,000 students.
What’s new | The city is refining its unified development ordinance, which the City Council approved in the last year. The ordinance combines the city’s zoning and development rules into a single document that is geared to making city rules easier to understand.
