Andrews

Established | In 1909 by the merger of the villages of Harper’s and Rosemary.

Origin of name | Walter H. Andrews, an Atlantic Coast Lumber Co. and Georgetown & Western railroad executive, helped found the town and later served as mayor.

What’s grand about it | Andrews was a railroad and lumber boom town, where thousands worked in the forestry, lumber and railroading businesses. It also is known as the home of Chubby Checker, who made “The Twist” a national sensation, though he actually grew up nearby.

What’s new | The town welcomed a new business in January – Agru America – a thermoplastic technology company that produces a wide range of pipes and fittings for the construction, chemical and civil/environmental industry. Also with a location in Georgetown, the town expects the company to create more than 100 jobs in Andrews and provide a boost to this town’s economy.

Property tax rate | Town millage is 130.5. Combined millage for Andrews residents is 296. Andrews residents pay taxes to the town of Andrews and Georgetown County.
