Established | Chartered June 30, 1966.
Origin of name | The name comes from its location on the Atlantic Ocean. Also called The Black Pearl, Atlantic Beach was the only place on the Grand Strand where blacks were allowed to vacation on the oceanfront during segregation.

What’s new | Leadership in Atlantic Beach is still undecided after two elections, one in November 2011 and a governor-ordered election in May 2012. In each election, the town selected a new mayor in Jake Evans who has not taken his seat due to lawsuits appealing the votes by candidates Retha Pierce and Windy Price.
