The city of Myrtle Beach and the city of North Myrtle Beach have decided that throwing taxpayers’ money at the problem of Bikeweek traffic control is the proper way of handling the large amount of motorcycle traffic. The mayor and city council say by increasing the number of police and routing the traffic on a specific route is the cure for this problem.
If you wish to handle and control this Atlantic Beach caused situation it is to use the proper amount of leverage. Both the above cities need to put in place at exits from Atlantic Beach to the adjoining cities many mandatory license, registration and insurance check points. At each checkpoint an officer would check to make sure proper documents are in order. This should occur 24 hours a day for the entire week no matter how many times a motorcycle rider or any other vehicle passes a checkpoint. By doing this procedure and using proper amount of time intervals, the traffic in the other cities around Atlantic Beach will be kept to acceptable numbers. If numbers are too great, slow the process that keeps them in Atlantic Beach, where they should be as it is their planned Bikeweek.
If the proper documents are not on hand, the customary laws will of course be carried out. Some will have motorcycles towed to local impound lots for the usual fees for retrieval. Others may even wind up at J. Reuben Long Detention Center. In these cases the sitting judge will enforce whatever fines or jail time the court decides. In case there is not enough room at the detention center, tents will be provided until the individual’s case can be heard. Our judges are paid yearly so this should not increase taxes, just the judge’s workload. (Well, he wanted the job, now it’s time to earn his keep.)
Some may say this is profiling. How can that be true, since it is not just a few people that are being checked, it is everybody that is passing the checkpoints that are being checked. All types of vehicles not just motorcycles. Now Atlantic Beach may say this doesn’t occur during Harley Bike Week. They would be correct in that assumption. However, I think Atlantic Beach can do the same thing during the Harley rally, and should do it. Also if the powers in Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach think this is a good idea for the Harley rally, by all means do it then.
