Re: Oct. 13 letter from Carla Makela, “Are we better off than we were two years ago?”

Congressman Tom Rice has done much to help this district and our state in less than two years in Washington. He has made it a priority to tackle tough issues and put us on a path to prosperity.

He has worked with government officials to expedite permits for our local roads and ports, including Interstate 73 and the Georgetown and Charleston ports, and to make sure our ports have the funding they need to be dredged.

In addition, Tom has worked with local elected officials to bring over 1,000 new high-paying jobs to our district. He has made it a priority to help our veterans get the assistance and medical care they need. The list goes on and on. So yes, we are much better off with our new congressman, Tom Rice.

Vida Miller understands

needs of her constituents

Vida Miller recently called out Rep. Stephen Goldfinch for voting himself a $12,000 pay raise. Of course he claimed “there was no pay raise vote.”

Well, Gov. Nikki Haley took issue with his handling of this issue when she recently addressed business leaders in Charleston and called out Mr. Goldfinch by name as one who voted for the raise and then voted to override her veto of the raise. The Governor told the business leaders “you need to know who did this.”

He claims to deliver good constituent services, yet pulled the rug from under the funding of a station for Murrells Inlet-Garden City fire district.

Enough already. The voters have a choice. Vida Miller won't play games with your trust and she won't place her self interest in the way of doing the job for her constituents.

Olive Garden

Restaurants are fine

just as they are

I am writing regarding the recent article regarding the Olive Garden. I know you have no control over what they do, but any Olive Garden I have been in has been busy, plus I take exception with the idiot that is nitpicking about the bread sticks, etc.

OK, so don't bring out the bread sticks and make everyone ask for more. Regarding the alcoholic drinks, the first words out of the server's mouth after “Welcome to Olive Garden” is, “can I bring you wine?” I don't drink and if I wanted to drink I would ask for it so shut up already.

Salt the water the pasta is cooked in, really? Michelle Obama is out there shoving food that the kids can't stand down their throats that is supposed to be healthy and this nut is wanting to salt the food more, something that is not too good for you either. Tell him to get his nutrition straight before he goes hollering around or better yet, just shut up.

NC elections

Bill Rabon doesn’t

represent my needs

Our legislators are supposed to represent us, the constituents. Sen. Bill Rabon does not represent me or my values. His profanity, bullying tactics, and outdated views on statewide policy are an embarrassment. This election day we have the opportunity to elect a senator who will listen to us, fight for us, and make us proud.

The time has come for us to make a change in District 8. This election is not about Republicans or Democrats, it is about common decency and electing someone who represents our community. I am voting for Ernie Ward so that we can change North Carolina's direction and start improving employment, education and the welfare of all of us.

Bikefest

Cost analysis might

get AB’s attention

Bikefest has and should be a major discussion among the leaders of our community. Our elected officials, law enforcement and community leaders have been meeting to better understand what needs to be done to make this event safer for the taxpayers of the towns affected.

Atlantic Beach leaders seem to have their heads in the sand. It is they who are responsible for sponsoring this event. A possible way to get their attention is a cost analysis of straight pay and overtime for SLED, The Horry County Sheriff’s Department, Myrtle Beach Police, North Myrtle Beach Police and other law enforcement agencies that are brought to the Myrtle Beach area to handle the crowds. I think everyone involved is concerned about public safety but no one is speaking out about the estimated cost.

Perhaps if Atlantic Beach were informed that costs for law enforcement to support their event was to be sent to the town perhaps that would get their attention. Just saying…

South Carolina’s disturbing schools law that lets police arrest students who talk back to teachers or otherwise ‘act in an obnoxious manner’ could be repealed. A House committee votes Tuesday on a bill to limit the law to adults.
