I applaud the Capital Project Sales Tax committee for bringing the Georgetown Port to the forefront again, and encouraging County Council to approve the 1 cent Referendum.
As Chairman of the Georgetown Port Task Force, I personally know how many hours, months, and years that our committee members have worked to obtain funding to dredge the port.
Eighty-five percent of the funding will be coming from state and federal funds. The 1 cent Referendum will raise the local funding needed to start the project.
The Georgetown Port is an asset that should be utilized and is needed to improve the economic opportunities in our region.
I do not like taxes any more than anyone else; but, this is the one tax that will go specifically where it is intended. By state statute, 100 percent of the funds generated must be used for specific capital projects identified in the referendum.
On Tuesday, Nov. 4, I am voting yes.
