Letters to the Editor

Letter | Sorting out the candidate qualifications for District 5

There are four people running to replace the retiring Paul Price in District 5 in the South Strand.

Newcomer Tyler Servant has failed to show up for two major candidate forums, and he appears to be trying to buy the election with four expensive mailings that are filled with platitudes and a flood of signs. His literature fails to show his work experience, his education or any particular qualifications.

Political newcomer Clif Smith is also spending heavily on mailings and signs. He pledges no new taxes, but he proposes two very expensive road projects that are not really needed, could not be built for 10 years and will not benefit the residents of this district except in the unlikely event of a total evacuation.

Both Chuck Ottwell and Reese Boyd have at least been active in local Republican politics. Reese seems reasonable, but I am troubled by his connections to some extreme right wing organizations. Both men seem knowledgeable about the current council agenda and are familiar with the other councilmen.

I will be deciding between these two experienced and qualified men when I vote in the Republican primary on June 10.
