Over the past 28 months I have been privileged to be part of a national nonprofit program known as Honor Flight. Most states in the U.S. have local Honor Flight “hubs” which have shared a common mission since the organization’s beginning in 2005. That mission is to transport as many WWII veterans as possible to visit the “Jewel of the National Mall” in Washington, DC – the WWII Memorial.
Your local hub is Honor Flight Myrtle Beach. We volunteers are local, the fundraising remains local and our mission remains the same: locate and honor area WWII veterans with a no cost day trip to Washington.
Since November 2010, Myrtle Beach organizers have provided 464 WWII veterans with their much deserved, long overdue recognition. There have been five flights, and the sixth Myrtle Beach Honor Flight is set for Aug. 28.
We ask the Grand Strand community to help us locate WWII veterans for that Aug. 28 flight. The average age of our most senior veterans is now 90 plus, and the youngest are around 86. Time is of the essence for this mission … that’s our slogan! The WWII Memorial in D.C. was dedicated in 2004. Imagine – these veterans waited more than 60 years for a memorial. They will however, humbly tell you the real heroes of WWII gave their lives for the freedoms we enjoy today. But those veterans who are still with us should experience this jewel. They indeed are heroes too!
Space remains available for the Aug. 28 journey to D.C. for these senior veterans of WWII. Sadly, we will lose many, many more thousands in the U.S. before all WWII veterans have had the opportunity to visit their memorial. Everyone who knows a WWII veteran, we have a seat for him or for her on Aug. 28. Help us honor them. We know they are out there, locally. Help us find them. Time is of the essence.
We are your local Honor Flight hub. Please support this mission. Contact Honor Flight Myrtle Beach at 843-957-8212 or visit www.honorflightmyrtlebeach.com
