Conway music education cuts weren’t done without consideration

Re July 19 letter by Caitlyn Subbert, “Don't get rid of music in schools,” concerning the elimination of the orchestra program at Conway High School and Whittemore Park Middle School.

Horry County Schools supports the arts as part of a comprehensive education for students and provides a broad variety of courses. However, in identifying courses to be offered at individual schools, several factors must be considered. Fine arts course offerings and personnel allocations are based on student interest and participation. In the case of the orchestra program at Whittemore Park Middle School and Conway High School, student interest and participation have declined over several years, resulting in the current elimination of the orchestra program.

The Conway schools are presently exploring ways to reinvigorate student interest in orchestra with the intent of rebuilding this important component of the total music program for the future.
