Winning is rightful reward for hard work

Re Aug. 15 letter by John Long, “U.S. won too many Olympic medals”

At least Mr. Long lives in America, where everyone is entitled to their opinion. The idea of distributing the Olympic medals to all participating countries is ridiculous. The purpose of competition is to achieve perfection in your sport/event. These athletes train all their lives and, if they win 22 medals as Michael Phelps did, then that is their reward for hard work.

I would just remind Mr. Long that there is only one winner. The other name for second place is first loser.

The writer lives in Germantown, Ohio.
