Medal equality must be Democratic idea

Re Aug. 15 letter by John Long, “U.S. won too many Olympic medals”

I sincerely hope that Mr. John Long of Conway had his tongue firmly planted in his cheek when he wrote his letter decrying the number of medals that the United States won during the London Olympics. If not, then I suggest that Mr. Long never again take in any type of athletic contest lest he suffer from severe heart palpitations watching someone win, and someone else lose.

Mr. Long, the Olympics are not 5- and 6-year-old T-ball games, where they don’t keep score, and everyone gets orange slices at the end of the game. And to suggest that medals be given to athletes who do not put the time and effort into training just so that they won’t feel bad about themselves is just plain asinine.

If I were a betting man, I would guess that Mr. Long is also a liberal Democrat who thinks that everyone should be entitled to just as much money as everyone else, no matter how much effort they put into earning a living because, well, it would just be fair. Gee, where have we heard that line before?
