President Obama has nothing to brag about

Re July 25 letter by James E. Dunn, “Obama has a good record to stand on”

The writer states “Obama has said very little about what he has accomplished.” The president is smart and has intentionally avoided discussing his accomplishments because there are none that he can brag about.

The bailout of the auto industry and especially GM soaked the taxpayers. The government will not get back even what they paid out, much less interest on the money. The CEO at GM who stood up to the excessive union demands was forced out. If you purchase a GM product your repairs under the warranty will also be paid for by the taxpayers. Moreover, 40 percent of the control has been handed to the unions and it will not take them more than 10 to 12 years to bring the company back down to its knees.

GM also uses more parts made in China than most of its competitors. Yes, Obama helped create and support jobs in China. Also, GM and Chrysler are not the auto industry in the U.S. Ford, BMW, Toyota, Nissan, Mercedes also produce automobiles in this country and they did not need a bailout.

Mr. Forman appropriately addressed the problems (July 26 letter, “Costs to rise with health care changes”) with the Affordable Care Act. I can only add that it will steal money away from Medicare to take care of the new enrollees. This will show up as a strain on the middle class senior citizens after 2014. If this act is so great why did the president and his minions (Reid, Pelosi, Clyburn, et al) exempt themselves from being included under its coverage? Obviously, Mr. Jessup of Conway (July 29 letter, “Health care politics make me sick”) is also confusing the new taxes with the already existing law exempting up to the first $250,000 for singles and $500,000 for a married couple on the primary residence.

Finally, I agree that Mr. Dunn is not a traditional Democrat. He is more of a liberal Democrat.

The writer lives in Surfside Beach.
