Column helped shatter stereotypes of the South

I recently visited cousins in North Myrtle Beach and was astonished to see Issac Bailey’s column on non-traditional marriage. (May 18). I felt a bit vulnerable being in “the South” for the first time, as I am a white lesbian, married, having helped raise an African-American daughter, who enjoys the love of grandsons. I was so pleased to read Mr. Bailey’s thoughtful article.

He challenged my stereotyping (about what people in the South think), as he challenged us all to question what we think we know to be true. Thanks, Mr. Bailey for adding to a great visit to your beautiful part of the country.

The writer lives in San Francisco, Calif.
