Theft of buntings a blow to patriotism

I am both saddened and terribly disappointed. The community of Highwood of Prince Creek, in an effort to show its own spirit of patriotism, placed two newly-purchased, beautiful flag buntings at its entrance on July 2. During the night of July 4, they were stolen. I find it a sad commentary on our current societal values – You have it, I don’t; I want it, I’ll take yours.

While the buntings are not actual American flags, they are representative of them and should be treated with respect. Is theft respectful? Maybe those who took them ought to ponder that question.

The writer lives in Murrells Inlet.
