God is not against gays

Re June 11 letter by Bob Bethel, “God against gays, end of story.”

Way before the Bible was written there were same-sex unions from 3,000 years before Christ. Greece has an island off its coast that was called Lesbo, which of course was a lesbian community. Until the 13th century, male bonding was common in churches across the Mediterranean.

Being against someone who is gay or lesbian and running for a public office is not American. The candidate with the best qualifications is the American way. We have men and women in government positions that are gay, and obviously there are people in this country that are not aware of that. As long as they are doing their job to the best of their ability, it is the American way.

Being gay is not a choice; God made them that way. Vote for the person for the right reason.

The writer lives in Murrells Inlet.
