New congressman must protect health of families

As a health care professional with over 30 years as a registered nurse, I was shocked to find out that Tom Rice , who is running for our congressman in the 7th District, does not support a smoke free environment in the workplace, restaurants, bars and public places.

Mr. Rice, chairman of the Horry County Council, was asked to put this matter up to vote as a referendum on the November ballot. He pulled this item from the council agenda and sent it to a committee, which means it will not be on the ballot.

I am not against a adult’s right to smoke, but there are designated open areas in public places where the smoker can choose to smoke and the nonsmokers and their families and young adults can exercise their right not to smoke.

One of the most important duties of our elected officials is to protect the health and safety of the citizens of our country.
