The Memorial Day weekend is always a busy time for this region and Grand Strand Regional Medical Center. This year, the hospital emergency department experienced record volumes over the holiday weekend with over 740 patients and 258 ambulances from May 25 to 28. A record 81 ambulances and over 200 patients presented on Saturday, May 26. EMS and hospital staff also responded to 55 trauma activations during the four days. We are thankful and appreciative to have talented and experienced emergency medical services (EMS) serving this area, along with the expertise of the nurses, physicians and support staff of the Grand Strand Regional emergency department. These professionals are the backbone of emergency care for this region and are responsible for saving lives every day. The partnership between first responders and Grand Strand Regional grows stronger each year resulting in more efficient and expert care in the field and at the hospital.
The hours are long and hard but the rewards are great for health care professionals. I thank all of the EMS crews who responded to calls over the Memorial Day weekend and throughout the year, as well as the talented Grand Strand Regional emergency and trauma staff. Working together, they provided the high quality of care for which our community can be proud and they are a true reflection of dedication and teamwork.
