Gov. Henry McMaster expects school closings before Irma

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster announced Thursday that he expected to issue an executive order Friday that would mandate closing schools on Monday and Tuesday.

The Georgetown County School District announced Thursday it would operate on a half-day schedule, including lunch, on Friday.

Horry County Schools has not announced a decision yet.

When a mandatory evacuation order is given, 15 Horry County schools could be opened as shelters. All told, the schools can hold 13,416 people. The schools are:

  • Aynor middle, elementary and high schools
  • Blackwater Middle School
  • Conway High School
  • Green Sea Floyds elementary, middle and high school
  • Loris elementary, middle and high school
  • North Myrtle Beach High School
  • Palmetto Bay Elementary School
  • Pee Dee Elementary School
  • Whittemore Park Middle School

On Thursday, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster announced lane reversals would be put in place in Myrtle Beach for an evacuation Saturday.
