A Loris man was sentenced to 30 years in prison in connection to the death of a three-month-old child.

Hassan Robert Tyler, of Loris, was sentenced to 30 years Thursday after an Horry County jury convicted him of homicide by child abuse in the 2013 death of a three-month-old child.

Jurors deliberated for about an hour and a half before they convicted Tyler in the death of his biological son, according to a news release from the 15th Circuit Solicitor’s Office. Circuit Court Judge Steven H. John sentenced Tyler, who must serve 85 percent of his sentence, according to Assistant Solicitor Martin Spratlin.

“Because the crime was a violent most serious offense Tyler must serve 85 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for release,” Spratlin said.

Tyler’s trial began Monday, according to the release.

Tyler was arrested in December 2013 after Loris police and the State Law Enforcement Division investigated the baby’s death. The infant was taken to Loris Hospital that same month with bruises and a skull fracture, and died a short time later, Spratlin said.
