N.C. man died in crash on Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach, 23-year-old man charged with DUI

A 23-year-old man was charged Sunday in connection with a crash that killed the 21-year-old driver of a mo-ped on Kings Highway.

Brandon Brinson, 21, of Magnolia, N.C., died from injuries he suffered in the crash, said Michelle McSpadden, Horry County deputy coroner.

Reginald Rivers Jr., was charged with felony driving under the influence with death, felony DUI with greatly bodily injury, hit and run in a crash with a death, driving under suspension, possession of a firearm or ammunition by a convicted felon and five counts of threatening a public official, according to Myrtle Beach Jail records.

Myrtle Beach police Lt. Joey Crosby said Rivers was speeding north on Kings Highway when his vehicle struck the mo-ped from behind near Woodside Avenue about 6:45 a.m. Sunday.

Officers closed Kings Highway when they initially went to the crash, and the northbound lanes of Kings Highway were blocked for hours after the crash.

That accident marked the third roadway fatality over the Memorial Day weekend.

On Friday, a 52-year-old Henderson N.C. man died of injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash on U.S. 17 near S.C. 22.

The crash involved multiple motorcycles and vehicles and backed up traffic in both directions near Myrtle Beach Mall, according to the Horry County Joint Information Center. The crash remains under investigation by the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Also on Friday, A 38-year-old Rex, Ga. man died after he ran a red light and slammed his 2008 Honda motorcycle into a boat towed by a pick-up truck, said Lt. Raul Denis with Horry County Police. The driver of the truck was making a left turn into a drive near Barefoot Landing.
