Myrtle Beach police charge four people with marijuana possession following incident on beach

Myrtle Beach police arrested four people in connection with smoking marijuana on the beach, according to a police report.

Officers arrested Justin Ketchner, 21, Andrew Deras, 22, Kathryn Higgins, 20, and Kayla Youngs, 20, and charged each of them with possession of marijuana.

Police said the group told an officer they were friends and had traveled to Myrtle Beach together.

While on patrol about 2 a.m. Tuesday along Ocean Boulevard, an officer smelled marijuana coming from the beach near Sixth Avenue North, authorities said.

The officer said he found the group sitting on a blanket on the beach and saw a glass pipe in middle of them, according to the report.

The officer also saw a bag of marijuana inside a bag of beers. Everyone in the group told the officer the marijuana and pipe did not belong to them, police said.

Police said Ketchner and Deras both appeared lethargic, had red eyes, and trouble focusing when answering questions. Both men told police they had been drinking alcohol, according to the report.

The group was taken to the Myrtle Beach Jail by a police van.
