Former Aynor High School substitute teacher pleads guilty to sexual battery with student, sentenced to prison

A former substitute teacher was ordered to spend six months in jail and five years on probation after he pleaded guilty to sexual battery with a student, according to court records.

Jerry David Love, 34, of Galivants Ferry pleaded guilty before Circuit Court Judge Roger M. Young Sr. to sexual battery with a 16-year-old student, according to Horry County court records. Young ordered Love to serve five years in prison, but suspended that sentence to six months in jail and five years on probation.

Love was given credit for the time he had previously served and ordered to be placed on the central registry of child abuse and neglect, according to court records. Love also must pay court costs.

Horry County police charged Love on March 12, 2013, after learning of a sexual relationship between him and a 16-year-old student, who had reported it to administrators at Aynor High School, authorities said. Love was a substitute teacher at the school.

The incidents occurred between May 5, 2012, and March 8, 2013, according to court records.

At the time of Love’s arrest, Teal Harding, Horry County Schools spokeswoman, said Love was removed from the substitute teacher list and “none of the alleged conduct occurred on school property.”

School staffers were alerted to the situation after another student reported she received some email messages from Love that made her uncomfortable, according to a police report. That student told police the messages began after she became friends with the victim on Facebook.

That student also told police another female student had received similar messages from Love, according to the report. That student told police that Love asked her to go to his home, but she did not and that he met her at Wal-Mart in Conway and kissed her in the parking lot. The student said she backed away because she knew it was wrong.

The victim, at first, told school officials that she only talked to Love, but later admitted she had been in a sexual relationship with him since May, according to the report. The victim said Love would pick her up after school and they would go to an abandoned golf course and have sex.

The victim said Love would then drive her back to school where her parents would pick her up, according to the report. The victim said the relationship began on their way back from a church activity when she rubbed his leg and touched him by mistake. The victim said Love told her he liked it.
