Horry County jury convicts Myrtle Beach man in absentia in sexual assault

An Horry County jury convicted a Myrtle Beach man, who did not attend his trial, of sexually assaulting a child younger than 10 years old, according to authorities.

Brent Egan Dotson, 56, of Myrtle Beach was convicted of first-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor and lewd act on a minor, said Candice Lively, a senior assistant solicitor with the 15th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.

Circuit Court Judge Benjamin Culbertson ruled that Dotson had notice of the trial and failed to appear, so the trial continued in his absence, Lively said. Culbertson sealed Dotson’s sentence until he can be located and appear before a judge for sentencing.

The mandatory minimum sentence for the sexual assault charge is 25 years in prison, and he must be monitored by GPS and register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, Lively said.
