Georgetown County inmate dies after being found unresponsive in his cell

A Georgetown County inmate died Wednesday evening after he was found unresponsive in his cell, according to the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office.

Danny Joe Crosby, 58, of Andrews had been housed at the Georgetown County Detention Center since June 17 on charges of failure to stop for a blue light, grand larceny with a value of $10,000 or more and first-offense driving without a license, according to jail records.

His bail was set at $13,237.50.

Crosby was found unresponsive by his cell mate, who notified correctional officers at the detention center, which is located at 2394 Browns Ferry Road in Georgetown County.

Crosby was taken to Georgetown Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to officials.

The preliminary autopsy results showed that Crosby suffered from emphysema and cardiovascular disease, according to the Georgetown County Coroner.

Officials with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division were notified and arrived at the Georgetown County Detention Center at 12:00 a.m. Thursday to begin their investigation into the incident.
