A juvenile accused of snatching a purse from a woman before jumping in the ocean to flee the others who chased him was detained Monday and sent to Sea Haven to await a juvenile court date.
A woman told Myrtle Beach police that she was walking on the sidewalk near 706-B N. Ocean Boulevard with her family when the boy ran up behind her and grabbed the purse off of her arm.
A young man, who witnessed the snatching, said he and his friends chased the kid down the sidewalk to the boardwalk and onto the beach “in an effort to get the victim’s purse back,” according to an incident report. The witness said, that as they caught up to the offender, the boy threw the victim’s purse and a red backpack he was carrying onto the beach and told them he had a gun.
The chase ended there as the boy swam out into the ocean, making it about one block north before coming out of the surf where he was detained by officers, according to the report. Witnesses told police of the purse snatching, identifying the kid as the thief.
