Jury selection to begin for Pierce trial

Jury selection is expected Tuesday in the case of suspended Atlantic Beach Mayor Retha Pierce, who was charged in 2009 with a misdemeanor driving under the influence in Marion County.

Pierce, who was charged with misdemeanor DUI on Sept. 16, 2009, after a traffic stop on U.S. 501 in Marion County, requested a jury trial related to the charge.

Pierce could not be reached Tuesday for comments.

Pierce has been charged with hit-and-run/leaving the scene of an accident, trespassing and resisting arrest in separate incidents since December 2007.

Field remains empty for council seats

With little more than a week to go, no one has filed to run for the three Georgetown City Council seats up for election this year.

Those seats are currently held by three Democrats; Mayor Pro-Tempore Rudolph Bradley, Councilman Clarence Smalls and Councilwoman Peggy Wayne.

Smalls and Wayne have said they intend to run for their seats again while Bradley said he is still contemplating another run.

The primary elections for the at-large council seats would be held on June 7th.

The filing opened on March 7 for Republican candidates and on March 14 for Democratic candidates. Filing closes for Republicans on March 25 at noon and for Democrats on March 28 at noon.
