Horry County board of education member resigns. Here’s what we know
A Horry County Board of Education member has submitted his resignation.
Howard Barnard, District 5 representative, submitted his resignation, effective April 1, due to health concerns, Horry County Schools district spokesperson Lisa Bourcier said in an email.
It is unclear what will happen to replace him. Board of education elections will happen this November. Primaries for open board seats will take place June 9. However, Barnard’s term didn’t end until 2028.
Barnard sent a letter to board president David Cox, citing his cancer diagnosis. Barnard was diagnosed about six years ago with bladder cancer and had been in remission for about 4 1/2 years, but now the cancer has returned, Barnard told My Horry News.
The Surfside Beach resident was elected to represent District 5, which covers Surfside and St. James, in November 2020.
He is a retired fighter pilot and colonel in the United States Air Force. He and his wife, Marga, have a son and daughter and five grandchildren.
