Driver dies after vehicle strikes tree on SC 701 in Loris. Coroner names victim

A person was killed Wednesday in a crash after the vehicle overturned along Highway 701.

The driver was traveling on Highway 701 and Highway 67 in Loris when the crash occurred about 1:50 p.m., according to South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Shadazya Mitchell, 28, of Dillion, died when she lost control of the car she was driving, according to an email from Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard.

The vehicle, a 2012 Kia SUV, was traveling north on Highway 701 when it crossed left of center and ran off the road, overturning, according to an email from Master Trooper Joseph Rowell. The vehicle then struck a tree.

The driver was trapped in the vehicle and emergency crews had to remove the driver, according to a Facebook post from the Horry County Fire Rescue.

The roadway was blocked for several hours while police investigated.
