Is Chief Amy Prock leaving Myrtle Beach Police? What we know about plans
After nearly 30 years on the force, Myrtle Beach Police Department Chief Amy Prock will retire in April.
On Monday night, MBPD spokesperson Randolph Angotti announced Prock’s retirement plans by email. The message came just days after Angotti told The Sun News Prock would retire “sometime in the future.”
Prock’s last day in office will be April 2, 2026, three months after Mayor Mark Kruea took office following a campaign against incumbent Brenda Bethune.
Last week, Kruea said he had “casually heard” Prock would retire, but not “in any official capacity.”
Prock first joined the department in 1996 and became the first female MBPD chief of police in 2017. In her tenure she oversaw the introduction of the city’s multi-million-dollar Real Time Crime Unit, ShotSpotter gunfire locator service and the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network.
Prock worked on waterfront, Narcotics and Special Operations assignments during her time in the department, according to the announcement.
“I am proud to have served the City of Myrtle Beach and to work with such an amazing team and partners,” Prock wrote in a statement. “Thank you to my family, my team, my partners, and my community for your support. Enjoy the beach!”
It’s unclear who will take over as chief, but Kruea told The Sun News he would request a national search to fill the position.
Prock rarely addressed the public directly. In the last few years of her time as chief, she has been criticized for her and her department’s handling of public safety in downtown, especially during a mass shooting in April 2025 that left a suspect dead and 11 people injured. Prock held a press conference last April, four days after Ocean Boulevard’s officer-involved shooting.
