A black bear sighting prompted a police response when the animal was seen running around Myrtle Beach on Sunday morning.

On Sunday afternoon, police announced that they had successfully tranquilized the bear, and will be relocating it to a wildlife preserve. The area was reopened.

“We appreciate the quick response from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and patience from our community while we secured the scene,” police said in a statement.

The Myrtle Beach Police Department responded to a call about the bruin in the area of Ninth Avenue South and Ocean Boulevard just before 6 a.m. Shortly after the initial report, another call came in alerting responders that the bear had climbed into a tree in the area of Oak Street and Eight Avenue South.

Myrtle Beach Police Department Animal Control officers worked alongside the Department of Natural Resources in efforts to safely relocate the bear.

To protect both the bear and members of the community, officers set up a perimeter at the scene and requested that the public keep their distance while their work was underway.

“We thank the community members and visitors who have provided the original information,” police said in a statement. “We will continue to provide updates as they are available.”

The Sun News has requested the police report for more information.
