Officials are investigating two fires that occurred at the same apartment Tuesday in Surfside Beach.
A duplex at 315A Third Ave. S in Surfside Beach caught fire around 5 a.m. Tuesday and was put out in about five minutes, said Anthony Fox, Surfside Beach fire chief. Firefighters were sent to that location again around 1 p.m. for another fire, Fox said.
Firefighters from Murrells Inlet/Garden City Fire Rescue, Horry County Fire Rescue and Surfside Beach Fire Department responded to the fires, Fox said.
Horry County Fire Rescue and Surfside Beach Police are investigating both fires, since they happened within hours of each other, Fox said. Both fires started on the second floor of the duplex, but Fox could not say if the residents were home when the fires started.
Sarah Chappell, who lives in the neighboring duplex, said around 5 a.m. she heard crackling sounds apparently from flames, but just thought someone was scratching on the wall.
“Then we heard someone banging on the door, yelling about a fire,” Chappell said. She roused her three children, boyfriend and dog and ran out of the house. All three children even made it to school today, Chappell said – though they were a little late.
“I tried to keep today normal for the kids, even though they were scared,” Chappell said.
Police are still investigating the incident.
