The Carolinas are being encouraged to participate in upcoming statewide tornado drills to ensure readiness for the severe storms.
The National Weather Service is issuing a statewide tornado drill for North Carolina scheduled for Wednesday morning, which is part of the state’s severe weather preparedness week that is set for the first week of March.
South Carolina’s statewide tornado drill is set for 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 11, according to the South Carolina Emergency Management Division website. Governor Nikki Haley has declared that South Carolina severe weather awareness week will be observed March 8 to 14.
The North Carolina drill will occur at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, and the weather service is strongly encouraging schools, businesses, and families in the state to participate, according to a press release about the event.
According to the weather service, the drill will be broadcast over the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration radio station and the emergency alert system via the required monthly test. However, most NOAA radio receivers do not sound an audible alert and will show a blinking light instead, so the weather service recommends that drill participates simply start their own practice exercise at 9:30 a.m.
Officials from the weather service said there will be no follow-up statements indicating the end of the drill, but said that the drill will conclude for participates when they feel they have adequately practiced tornado preparedness.
In the event of actual severe weather, the drill will be postponed until 9:30 a.m. on Friday.
The South Carolina drill has an alternate date of March 12 and will be using the official tornado warning code while broadcasting on weather radio stations during the practice test. Public schools, state and local emergency management organizations, the South Carolina Broadcasters Association, and others will participate in this annual event.
The purpose of these drills is to ensure that the community is prepared in the event of severe weather, according to the national weather service.
