Organizers of the Myrtle Beach Marathon are gearing up for registration to begin in a few weeks, saying while next year’s event will take place in February, they haven’t ruled out moving the race into March for 2016.
Marathon director Shaun Walsh said after the Feb. 14, 2015, race, the marathon could be moved to the first weekend of March.
Registration for this year’s begins marathon on Aug. 14 and Walsh said there are no major changes to next year’s event. Walsh said things still are in the planning stages for moving the race.
Walsh said he hopes to either be able to move the runner’s expo into the city’s new indoor sports facility – the Myrtle Beach Sports Center – or keep it in the Myrtle Beach Convention Center and have another event move to the sportsplex.
He said he feels good about the potential to move the race, saying he’s spoken with Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Brad Dean to gauge the business community’s interest in having a large event in town that weekend.
“I talked to Brad Dean about it and the business community is very encouraged about moving the dates,” Walsh said.
He said the Valentine’s Day-President’s Day weekend has gotten to be a busy enough weekend in Myrtle Beach that moving the marathon to March could help the local economy.
“It could give local businesses another boost on a different weekend,” he said.
