Police, rescue units and the U.S. Coast Guard was looking for a person seen swimming in the Atlantic Ocean Saturday afternoon who quickly vanished.
Pawleys Island Police were called to the ocean, just south of the pier near 372 Myrtle Avenue, at about 1:45 p.m. Saturday by a couple of real estate workers at a nearby home they were working at.
“They saw a man swimming about 100 yards offshore and then when they turned around, they did not see him anymore,” said Pawleys Island Police Chief Mike Fanning. “They believe there wasn’t enough time for the person to swim back in.”
Fanning said police questioned those at the beach, looked for stranded beach towels and belongings, checked with area homes to see if anyone was reported missing.

“The difficulty for us is that Saturday is major turnover day,” Fanning said. “People check out of their houses, but sometimes stay at the beach all day. We just want to be on the safe side and make sure that nobody was out in the water.”
Midway Fire Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard assisted in the search.
