Conway’s St. Nicholas BBQFest to be featured on national TV show Tuesday

Conway’s St. Nicholas BBQFest will be featured on the premier of “Holy Smokers” Tuesday at 8 p.m. on the Discovery Network Channel’s “Destination America.”

Filming for the pilot episode began in October and included St. Paul’s Church, the founding sponsor of the St. Nicholas BBQFest, as well as Conway’s historic downtown and riverfront. The production crew returned in November to film the actual cook-off and interview many of the pit masters for some of North and South Carolina’s best BBQ, said John Wilkins, event co-chairman and spokesman.

“We are excited to be selected for the pilot episode of ‘Holy Smokers’; 2013 represented our largest festival to date,” Wilkins said. “The national exposure will be good for our festival and for Horry County and Conway, as well. We are hoping that this national coverage will attract even larger crowds, enabling us to provide even greater support to our area’s service organizations.”

The festival contributed almost $24,000 to charitable organizations within Horry County in 2013. The 2014 St. Nicholas BBQFest — the BBQ War Between the States — will be held Nov. 15. “Taste of Conway" will precede the event on Nov. 13.
