Backgate intersection to close Wednesday night for construction

The intersection at U.S. 17 Bypass and S.C. 707 will be closed from 10 p.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday for construction on the new bridge.

Drivers will still be able to travel on U.S. 17 Bypass, but will not be able to turn left onto S.C. 707 or Farrow Parkway. Drivers on S.C. 707 and Farrow Parkway will not be allowed to travel through the intersection or make left turns, though they still will be able to turn right onto the bypass.

Alternative routes on S.C. 544 and Fantasy Harbour-U.S. 17 interchange will be posted on signs near the backgate intersection.

The intersection has to be closed so crews can install an overhang bracket, tighten bolts on the northbound bridge and remove the wooden protective structure from the southbound bridge, according to Horry County.

If weather keeps the work from happening overnight Wednesday, it will be pushed to Thursday night.

The $121.7 million project, known as the back gate construction because of its proximity to the old back gate of the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, will include an overpass that eliminates the stoplight at the Farrow Parkway/S.C. 707 intersection, and keeps U.S. 17 Bypass traffic moving. It is estimated that about 70,000 cars and trucks pass through that intersection during peak season.

The project is expected to be complete in November, three months later than originally planned because of weather delays.
