Horry County Notebook | A home for bicycling in the Myrtle Beach area

Fans of both pedal and muscle power may not know it, but there’s a park in Horry County that caters to their needs.

The Myrtle Beach Triathlon Club approached Horry County Parks and Recreation about turning one of its sites into a run and bike park, said Lisa Bourcier, county spokeswoman, via email.

The 24.5-acre area is at the corner of S.C. 31 and International Drive along the Intracoastal Waterway, near Carolina Forest, and the tract has two tiers due to the spoil basin, she said

Brent Taylor, director of the county’s parks and recreation, said the site is reserved for future athletics fields. However, there’s no rush to develop it, and no funding for that yet.

“They (the club) fully understand it’s a temporary site,” Taylor said.

The spoil basin is there, Taylor said, in case the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers needs to drain the Intracoastal Waterway for whatever reason.

“That happens very infrequently,” he said.

While the county said the site is temporary, triathlon club president Peter Politis hopes his group will have the park so well established the county will decide to leave it as is.

“This place has potential for massive races,” Politis said, hoping it could one day host a full triathlon.

In the six months the club has used the space, they’ve developed a four-mile single-track trail, Politis said. The group is also working with the Waccamaw Trail Blazers Mountain Biking Club, which is setting up races in the park.

Since the site is earmarked for future county parks and recreation needs, Taylor said the department will work with Politis to find a permanent home for the bike and run park.

Time appears to be on everyone’s side.

“That’s far in the future. We haven’t even looked at another area,” Politis said.
