DUI charge filed in fatal crash

A Conway man has been charged with felony driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a fatal crash on Wednesday.

The wreck occurred about 12:50 p.m. on Antioch Road off S.C. 378, said Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins with the Highway Patrol.

Sharon Johnson of Antioch Road was flown from the scene to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, N.C., but she died about 4 p.m., Coroner Robert Edge said.

Roy Alford, 50, was charged Wednesday with felony DUI involving death, leaving the scene of a crash involving death, malicious damage to personal property and public intoxication, according to records at J. Reuben Long Detention Center.

The Highway Patrol's Multi-Interdisciplinary Accident Investigation Team continues to probe the crash and has yet to determine the events that contributed to the crash, Collins said.

Johnson is the seventh person to die in a hit-and-run crash in Horry County this year. The last such crash occurred on June 19 when two foreign guest workers were killed on U.S. 17 Bypass in front of The Sun News.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
