Fire crews have been battling a blaze at an apartment complex in the Surfside Beach area early Wednesday morning.

The fire started around 5:30 a.m. on Clearwater Drive within the Southbridge Lakes apartments close to Surfside Beach, off Glenns Bay Road, according to Mark Nugent, spokesman with Horry County Fire Rescue.

HCFR, Surfside Beach and Murrells Inlet-Garden City Fire departments were all on scene. Crews remained there hours after the call putting out hotspots and investigating.

Two units suffered heavy damage in the blaze that blackened the mid section of a four-unit building. Nugent said about seven people suffered minor injuries, but no one would likely be transported to a hospital for further treatment. Fourteen were displaced.

A woman at the scene clutched an 8-month-old baby girl as she stood with her young grandson at the edge of all the activity. She said the upstairs unit burned so badly was the home of her daughter, her daughter’s fiance and three children.

Her daughter and family were all sleeping when a nearby neighbor noticed the fire and alerted them to the blaze allowing them to make it out to safety. she said.

Authorities are still working to identity the cause and origins of the fire.
