A Georgetown man being pursued by deputies was killed when his motorcycle crashed into a log truck at the intersection of Lanes Creek Drive and Johnson Road Wednesday night.
Georgetown County Coroner Kenny Johnson identified the crash victim as 25-year-old Brandon Cunningham.
Cunningham caught the attention of deputies when they responded to a complaint of suspects operating reportedly stolen dirt bikes in a public roadway in the Lanes Creek area at 7:05 p.m., according to a release from the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office.
Officers say they saw the reported vehicles and attempted to stop Cunningham, who was operating a Honda motorcycle.
Cunningham fled the scene and deputies pursued him, according to the release.
Additional deputies in the area responded and officers again attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle at an intersection.
Cunningham’s Honda motorcycle was traveling east on Lanes Creek Drive in Georgetown when he came to the intersection of Johnson Road and struck a southbound log truck, according to Cpl. Sonny Collins with the S.C. Highway Patrol.
The sheriff’s office release says Cunningham crashed into the side of a log truck as he fled “in an attempt to evade deputies.”
Cunningham was transported to the Tidelands Health Georgetown Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, according to the release.
“The driver of the truck was not injured,” Collins said.
