Conway Medical Center went live Thursday morning with its telemedicine link to the Medical University of South Carolina.
The link is to put MUSC’s pediatric critical care and pediatric emergency medicine specialists on an audio-visual hookup with the Conway hospital for help with diagnosis and treatment of potentially life-threatening problems with patients up to 18 years old.
Conway gets about 10,000 pediatric patients in its emergency room annually and all of those in critical condition to this point have been transferred to MUSC.
With the telemedicine link, physicians at both institutions estimate that 20 percent fewer will need to be transported in the future.

Conway Medical Center is one of three Lowcountry hospitals to get the new link. Waccamaw Community Hospital is one of the other two, neither of which are live with their MUSC connection yet.
The initial phase of all three telemedical links is being funded by a grant from the Duke Endowment.
