Tropical Storm Chantal, July 4 videos fill Myrtle Beach TikTok feed. Watch here
Tropical Storm Chantal and Independence Day weekend, one of Myrtle Beach’s busiest weekends, collided, bringing about many TikTok videos joking about the less-than-fortunate vacation weather and crowds.
Many creators used trending TikTok audios, such as one speaking about a Jet2Holiday used to poke fun at messy vacations, to showcase the weather. Audio from a 1999 Spongebob Squarepants episode where Spongebob has to deliver a pizza against all odds also made several appearances in videos.
Tropical Storm Chantal was the first storm of its kind in 2025 for Myrtle Beach. The storm began moving in on Saturday, bringing strong winds, rain and rough surf. It made landfall at Litchfield Beach early Sunday morning. The area saw wind speeds of 50 mph, The Sun News reported.
In the TikToks, users showcased their attempts to enjoy a beach vacation while dealing with the insane wind and surf of a tropical storm. Vacationers also shared video of the crowded beaches, which tend to reach capacity every July 4.
User Brandon Brengartner shared a video of two vendors selling slushies and Italian ice attempting to move across the beach as high winds and rough surf threaten to take them out.
There were also many videos of people’s hair flying in the wind, vacationers attempting to read on the beach while their book pages go crazy and winds gusts sending sand into the air.
User diamondnicolew posted a video of a lifeguard swimming out to rescue a pair of surfers who got stranded in the water. The beaches had a double red flag warning for much of the weekend, which meant no one was allowed in the water due to rip currents and other dangerous conditions.
Vacationers also shared videos of the crowds that make their way onto the beaches every year. Videos show various beaches with walls of people and umbrellas attempting to enjoy an Independence Day at the beach.
