Holiday events continue right up until Christmas in Myrtle Beach area

Another week before Christmas means lots of concerts, festivals and seasonal events.

The Carolina Master Chorale will take a trip around part of the world with “Feliz Navidad: Christmas from Spain and Latin America,” with concerts at 4 p.m. Saturday at Seaside United Methodist Church in Sunset Beach, N.C., and Sunday at Trinity Episcopal Church in Myrtle Beach.

Tim Koch, the Chorale’s music director and conductor, said the performances will entail “a lot of familiarity,” such as the concert’s namesake made famous by Jose Feliciano, but “with a little different twist.”

“We’re doing a really interesting arrangement that I’ve never heard before,” Koch said.

The repertoire will flow with popular numbers and others that audiences “might not have heard before but will be glad they did,” he said.

The chorale will recount music from Spain’s Catalonia region “for some older carols ... that have stood the test of time,” as well as other places including Mexico, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Southwest.

“We reached into different cultures [other] than Spanish,” Koch said, “and lifted out the ways they celebrate Christmas.”

Welcoming back a former student as a special guest, Kirstin Chavez, enthuses Koch, who praised her for playing the title role in Bizet’s “Carmen” with ensembles around the world. She also will join the chorale at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday for “A Christmas Carmen: A Spanish Holiday Evening” at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club in Myrtle Beach, and for the chorale’s performance of the opera on May 5.

“She is spectacular,” Koch said. “Having Kirstin as our marquee guest artist of the whole season, between this and ‘Carmen,’ ... is part of our 30th anniversary season.”

Artful celebration

Ebb & Flow Art Co-op in Murrells Inlet will have its fifth annual Holiday Art Show & Sale 1-6 p.m. Sunday.

See works and handmade ornaments by the more than 35 artists the gallery represents, along with entertainment by Phyllis Tanner Frye and Steve Russell.

Those artisans include Pawleys Island native Keels Culberson Swinnie, whose autobiographical boat-building painting was the poster of the 2012 Wooden Boat Show in Georgetown.

She said for this show she and colleagues submitted pieces, including ornaments, which are a staple for this event.

“Everybody loves to get handmade, hand-painted ornaments,” Swinnie said. “People always come to get those.”

She estimated her total at about 50.

“I just cut them out of wood,” Swinnie said, and “paint little, different things on them, like shrimp, flounder or sea turtles, along with different creek scenes.

“I do different ones each year, and a lot of them are very coastal themed. They’re kind of different Christmas ornaments than you usually see. They’re not your traditional Christmas ornaments.”

Swinnie said some artists make them from blown glass or in the shapes of wooden birdhouses.

“Some do angels out of oyster shells,” she said.

This annual celebration draws “a different crowd” than the regular weekend passers-by, Swinnie, and that the hosts are always happy to see “a bunch of people from out of town.”

Besides regular entertainers in the gallery, Phyllis Tanner Frye and Steve Russell, other artists “will bring their instruments and join in, and the 2012 sale will include local, organic oranges and local honey,” which are “really, really good,” Swinnie said.

Big letter sculptures spelling “ART” stand outside in front for Ebb & Flow, and the word is decorated per the season.

“Although we didn’t do it as Christmassy this year,” Swinnie said, “now we have it with trees and birds. Last year, we had it candy cane stripe looking.”

Still, it’s part of the gallery’s signature and identity.

“A lot of people tell us they notice it,” Swinnie said.
