On the Cheap with Julie Henry

Now that we’re moving into the holiday season, the first of the craft fairs and holiday-themed events are beginning to crop up. If you’re not yet in the holiday spirit, there’s also a health fair, a wine festival and some food sampling events over the next few weeks. Here’s the list:

Friday, Saturday and Sunday

• On Friday from 4-9 p.m., Barefoot Landing is hosting “A Night Out at Barefoot,” a progressive dinner that will allow you to sample food from a number of restaurants at discounted prices (including $5 appetizers and $4 desserts). To get the food and drink deals, you’ll need a wristband, which you can pick up for $5 at the North Strand Helping Hand booths located near Izod/Van Heusen, Wild Wing, and Carolina Vineyards Winery. When you pick up your wristband, you’ll also be given a menu.

• Horry-Georgetown Technical College is holding a health fair on Friday from 9 a.m.-noon in Valor Park at The Market Common in Myrtle Beach. Admission is free. There will be free and low-cost health screenings, and advice about healthy cooking (including samples).

• On Sunday from noon-3 p.m., the American Culinary Federation is holding its annual Souper Supper in Valor Park at The Market Common in Myrtle Beach. Tickets are $10 for adults; $5 for kids (plus a $1 per ticket processing fee) if you buy them in advance at The ticket prices are $12 for adults; $7 for kids at the gate. This event features soup, bread, beverage, and dessert samples from more than 40 local restaurants and local chefs.

Nov. 8-11

• The annual Dickens Christmas Show & Festivals begins on Thursday at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center and runs through Nov. 11. Tickets are $8.50 per person ($4 for kids) for a single-day pass; $13 each for a multi-day pass. Kids under 2 get in free. Parking is $3. The show features more than 350 vendors selling fine arts, crafts, imported gifts, toys, gourmet foods, clothing and more. Hours are from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and from noon-6 p.m. on Sunday.

• La Belle Amie Vineyard at 1120 St. Joseph Road in Little River is hosting an Island Fever Music Festival from noon-5 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is $8, but if you bring three canned goods to be donated to local food banks, they’ll give you a $3 discount on admission. The festival includes live music, wine tasting, a gift shop, food and drink vendors, and a vineyard tour.

• The Waccamaw Arts & Crafts Guild is hosting “Art in the Park” on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in Valor Park. This art show will include works from more than 30 local and regional artists. Admission is free.

Nov. 15

• The annual St. Nicholas Winterfest begins today and runs through Saturday at various Conway venues. Some of the events are free; there’s a small fee for the others. Events include a Taste of Conway food sampling event, a barbecue cook-off, and a Holiday Arts & Crafts Fair. Go to for festival hours and ticket information.
