‘The Cabin in the Woods’

“The Cabin in the Woods” is the most original and thought-provoking horror movie to come down the pike since 1996’s “Scream.”

From “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” masterminds Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard, this mix of horror, comedy, mystical beings and all manner of creatures that go bump in the night is better experienced with as little knowledge as possible.

Just know that it is impossible not to be entertained by this film. The two standouts are character actors Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford. Any scene with the two of them elevates the film to even greater heights.

It was just released on Blu-ray on Sept. 18, so do yourself a favor and seek out this gem. It’s easily one of the best of 2012.

‘The Carpenter’ by The Avett Brothers

The Avetts continue to mature as a band and songwriters on their second collaboration with producer Rick Rubin. Brothers Scott and Seth Avett have always drawn on their own experiences in their songwriting, and this effort shows no departure from a winning formula. Particularly poignant are the songs “Through My Prayers” and “A Fathers First Spring,” while “Paul Newman vs. the Demons” gives longtime fans a reminder of the brothers’ rock roots.
