Myrtle Beach man charged with murder in hammer attack

A Myrtle Beach man has been charged with murder in the beating death of a 40-year-old man inside an apartment Friday, according to authorities.

Brandon Lavon Burgess, 25, of Myrtle Beach, was charged with murder late Friday in the death of Benjamin Allen Singleton, according to a police report. Burgess is being held at J. Reuben Long Detention Center without bond. He must appear before a circuit court judge for a bail hearing.

Singleton died at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center a couple hours after police were called at 5:30 a.m. Friday to Carver Apartments at 1300 Spivey Ave., Myrtle Beach police Capt. David Knipes said. Police took Burgess into custody at the apartment after a woman called to report the incident.

According to a police report, a woman called 911 dispatchers and reported “her boyfriend possibly killed a person.” Officers found an injured Singleton inside the apartment. The woman told police dispatchers a hammer was used in the assault, according to an incident report.

According to an arrest report from the S.C. Law Enforcement Division, Burgess had previous convictions that included arrests in 2004 by Georgetown police for assault and battery of an high an aggravated nature and giving police false information. In that incident he was giving five years probation.

Burgess was charged again by Georgetown police in 2005 with probation violation and possession of drugs and was giving three years in prison, according to SLED records. In May 2008, Georgetown police charged Burgess with carrying a concealed weapon and later in September Myrtle Beach police charged him with giving liquor to a minor and public intoxication and records show he was given time served on the charges.

In March 2010, Myrtle Beach police charged Burgess with trespassing and he was given five days in jail.
