A North Carolina man is being held without bond on a charge of first-degree murder in the shooting death of a 31-year-old that occurred during the weekend, according to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office.
James Carson Young, 29, was arrested Sunday at his home, said Sgt. April Stanley with the sheriff’s office. Young made his first appearance in court Monday morning.
At 4 p.m. Sunday, deputies responded to 741 Heights Place in Leland, N.C., and found Michael Shane Poythress, 31, shot in the chest, Stanley said. Poythress was pronounced dead at the scene and police learned he was involved in an altercation that escalated to the shooting.
The case remains under investigation, Stanley said.
