Conway teen indicted on carjacking, attempted murder charges

An Horry County grand jury returned indictments against a 15-year-old boy, who is being tried as an adult on charges he shot a Conway woman in the head, court records showed.

Zireek Brooks of Conway was indicted on charges of attempted murder, armed robbery, kidnapping and carjacking, according to the indictments released this week.

The charges stem from the June 12 shooting of Danielle Delpercio, a Conway woman who gave him a ride, according to authorities. The charges are felonies, and each carries up to 30 years in prison.

In September, a family court judge granted a waiver filed by prosecutors to try Brooks as an adult in circuit court.

Brooks has been in the custody of the state Department of Juvenile Justice since the incident. The teen remains there after a circuit court judge on Jan. 12 denied Brooks request for bond.

On June 12, Conway police said officers were called to a home on Lakeside Drive where they found a woman holding a rag to her head and bleeding profusely. Delpercio told the officers she was at the Sav-Way gas station when a young man asked her for a ride.

Delpercio agreed, and they left the store. While she was following directions to his destination, the police report says, the teen began making sexual advances before pulling out a handgun.

Delpercio told police she tried to run the car into a ditch and then into a tree in an attempt to distract him so she could get away, but he fired a shot that hit her in the right side of her head.

Delpercio jumped from the car and ran to a nearby home and beat on the door. The homeowners helped her and called 911. The bullet remains lodged in her neck.

Brooks was arrested just before 1 a.m. June 13, after officers saw the woman's car on Ninth Avenue. When officers tried to pull the car over, the driver crashed the vehicle and ran toward Nelson Street where officers caught up with him.
